Claudette Johnson

2015

Pastel and gouache on paper

154 x 104 cm

Claudette Johnson stepped back from exhibiting in the early 2000s, preferring to focus on teaching at various institutions in London and raising her children. In 2015, her friend and fellow artist Lubaina Himid invited her to exhibit in a group show at Hollybush Gardens gallery in London. This prompted Johnson to create new work, including this impressive large-scale drawing. Her bold use of gouache, combined with sensitive and assured drawing in pastel, signalled a renewal of her art.
