Two-handled vase

Umbria, probably Deruta, Italy

Around 1490–1500

Tin-glazed earthenware

Height: 23.6 cm

This is a rare example of a type of vase made for a young couple. A profile is seen on each side, suggesting a married or engaged couple. Like the wedding chests displayed nearby, this vase would have decorated their new home.

These vases are often depicted in paintings holding lilies, symbols of purity.
