Triptych with the Virgin and Child

Northern France or Italy

Around 1325–50

Carved ivory

176 x 65 x 207 mm

To either side of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child are scenes from Christ’s birth. Above, God the Father is flanked by angels.

Traces of colour and gold leaf are visible on the lining of Mary’s cloak. Originally, she likely held a carved flower. In its place, a delicate stalk was painted with
gold over a crack in the ivory.
