Two angels draw back a curtain to reveal the Christ Child surrounded by his parents, Mary and Joseph. To the right are Mary’s cousin, Saint Elizabeth, and her infant son, John the Baptist. Garofalo was a leading painter in the northern Italian city of Ferrara. This work is typical of the delicately painted devotional images in which he specialised.
