Vincent van Gogh
Paris, September-October 188
Oil paint on cotton
Whereas Van Gogh’s brushstrokes had previously followed the curves of his face, they now radiate outward from his nose, which is the central element of the composition. This effect is enhanced by the large halo created around his head and hat by the orange dots laid over long blue strokes.
Technical examination has shown that this work was made over several sessions, suggesting Van Gogh deliberated over his placement of colours and choice of effects. It also reveals a growing confidence in his skill and a willingness to push the boundaries of the art he had seen and made in Paris.
