Portrait of Nina Hamnett

Roger Fry

1917

Oil paint on canvas

97.5 x 77 cm

The artist Nina Hamnett lived and painted in the bohemian art worlds of both London and Paris. She had been part of the Omega Workshops for a number of years when Roger Fry made this bold portrait of her. He accentuates Hamnett’s sharp, bobbed haircut and plain working clothes, features that would have marked her as a strikingly modern woman to contemporary viewers.
