Portrait of Jan de Mol

Master of the Guild of Saint George

Oil paint on wood

37.6 x 29.9 cm

Jan de Mol was a prominent citizen and council member of the city of Mechelen, in northern Belgium. This portrait is the only remaining element of the multi-part work commissioned as a memorial to him by his family. The Dutch inscription on the frame reads: ‘In the year 1498 on the last day of May our father Jan de Mol died, a true friend’.

This unidentified artist is named after a group portrait of guild members from Mechelen, the style of which is closely related to this work.
