Peter Doig
2015
Oil paint on canvas
296 x 200 cm
This imposing self-portrait depicts the artist in his Trinidad studio. He stands in front of his large painting Stag (2002–05), adopting the pose of the man in that work who clings to a tree. The painting gives a sense of how Peter Doig’s works feed into one another, the process of painting undertaken as a continuous journey. The title refers to the fact that Doig often paints at night. It records his use of the studio for weekly public film screenings, which he called STUDIOFILMCLUB. It also notes his habit of sometimes playing racquetball there — a game can be seen underway through the grided opening on the left.
