Night Bathers is set at Trinidad’s Maracas Bay, one of the most popular beaches on the island. Rather than a sun-drenched paradise, Peter Doig depicts a nocturnal scene that is strange and mysterious, the figure of the woman lying on the beach in the moonlight appearing as if in a dream. The shimmering colours were inspired by the artist witnessing phosphorescence one night when the sea was lit up by the glow of millions of marine organisms.
