Footed bowl with Hannibal elected general

Durantino-Fontana

Urbino, Italy

1560–70

Tin-glazed earthenware

Diameter: 38.3 cm

This was part of a magnificent set of tableware called the Hannibal Service. Nearly 100 plates and basins from this service are known.

Each piece depicts a story from the life of Hannibal, who led forces from Carthage (now in Tunisia) against the Romans. This bowl was once owned by the Medici Grand Dukes of Florence, amongst the greatest ever collectors of maiolica.
