Peter Doig
2023
Pigment on linen
200 x 295 cm
This is the first London subject Peter Doig has painted since setting up a new studio in the city in 2021. The scene is based on a place he knows well: Regent’s Canal in north London. The painting has its origins in a birthday card Doig made for his young son, represented sitting across a table on the tow path eating breakfast. However, the painting grew into a work that conveys a brooding atmosphere and a sense of the strangeness of this historic London canal, a survival that feels somehow out-of-time in the modern city.
