Alice at Boscoe’s

Peter Doig

2014-23

Oil paint on linen

121 x 161.5 cm

This painting has developed over many years and was finally completed for this exhibition. The girl in the hammock is the artist’s daughter, depicted in the garden of a house his family rented in Trinidad. Peter Doig imbues the scene with an almost magical quality through the patchwork of rich colours overhung with lush foliage. The property once belonged to Boscoe Holder (1921–2007), a celebrated Trinidadian painter much admired by Doig. Holder had a remarkable earlier international career as a dancer and musician. In the 1950s, he and his wife, Sheila Clarke, hosted the television show Bal Creole on the BBC, introducing British audiences to Caribbean dance and the steel pan. They lived in London for twenty years before returning to Trinidad.
