Peter Doig
2015
Oil paint on canvas
81.6 x 69.7 cm
Peter Doig made this portrait of the poet Derek Walcott (1930–2017) as the poster for a reading of the poems he wrote in response to Doig’s paintings. The event was held at Doig’s Trinidad studio shortly after the book of poems and paintings, called Morning, Paramin, was published in 2016. The painting was hung by the entrance, where Doig typically displayed a poster for his weekly STUDIOFILMCLUB screenings. Walcott was himself a painter as well as a poet and Doig depicts him sitting outside at his easel. Walcott’s poems inspired the etchings shown here.
